The Scott Polar Research Institute’s (SPRI) Freeze Frame database allows users to search around 20,000 photographic images illustrating polar exploration, from the 19th century onwards.

The photographic negatives in the SPRI’s collection are a unique resource, but also an extremely fragile one. Over 20,000 photographic negatives from 1845-1960 have been digitised, representing some of the most important visual resources for research into British and international polar exploration.

Digitisation of related documents – information from personal journals and official reports from expeditions on which these photographs were taken – provides historical and cultural context for the images.

Images can be found via keyword searches or by browsing collections.

You can then create your own gallery of images which you can save and return to by creating an account on the site.

Sir Ranulph Fiennes has created his own gallery of favourite images, which can be viewed here.
